Antwerp (Anvers) is like a small jewel in the crown of Belgium. The city has one of the most important harbors in Europe and is a classic Belgian town with cobblestone streets and buildings with exceptional Flemish architecture. I recommend a visit to Antwerp on your holiday in Belgium if you are passionate about picturesque towns and a relaxing atmosphere with special urban landscapes.
How to get to Antwerp
We stayed in Brussels and organised a day trip to Antwerp. From the central train station in Brussels there are many trains that you can take to get to Antwerp. A Brussels-Antwerp train trip costs 7.7 euro and takes about 50 minutes.
Tips & tricks: Train tickets are much cheaper during the weekend.
What to do in Antwerp
Antwerp is a small town that you can discover in half a day. The city’s modern area is set in a wide shopping street with the trendiest clothes and accessories. A shopping session never hurt anybody, right? This lively street begins at the Antwerp train station, which has an absolutely fascinating architecture and stops in the historic city center.
The best plan when visiting this city is to stroll through the historical streets and discover unique urban corners. You’ll see romantic cafes, chocolate stores with the most delicious chocolate you’ve ever tasted, old churches, and buildings with traditional architecture. The attention to detail is essential here because the decorations of the buildings, bars and shops are colorful and full of personality.
As you approach the Escaut River, which passes through Antwerp, you will find a magnificent view and a stone castle known as the medieval fort Het Steen, built in the Middle Ages to keep the pirates away. From here you have the opportunity to take a walk along the high river bank to admire the harbor and taste fresh fish.
After that, you can go back to the historical area to marvel at the bohemian architecture and atmosphere of this city. A delicious breakfast, coffee and some Belgian pralines can be the perfect excuse to stop at one of the quiet terraces in the town center. We chose to devour some decadent burgers at the Hard Rock Cafe.
